The bookcase is built from clear western cedar. It has 6 shelves and 3 small drawers. The entire piece is hand milled and joined using traditional woodworking techniques. It is assembled using doweled rabbets, through mortises and dovetails on the cabinet top. The drawer are hand-dovetailed with solid pine sides and bottoms. The knobs are hand turned and are not removable.. The back of the case is shiplapped pine, painted flat black. The entire case is finished with a soap finish. This is exactly as it sounds. Soap crystals are dissolved into warm water and left to gel. This “paste” is then rubbed on the furniture to protect it and give it a soft, satin-like to the touch finish. This is a traditional finish for furniture in Scandanvia.
